Strategy Overview

Golem competes with Rhydon as a Stealth Rock setter due to the two of them having identical typing and similar Attack and physical bulk. It distinguishes itself from Rhydon with its access to Explosion, allowing it to devastate most of its switch-ins while maintaining offensive momentum. Furthermore, a slightly higher Speed stat allows it to outspeed Sassy Alolan Muk while running an Impish nature. However, Rhydon's better HP and Attack stats let it perform better as a Stealth Rock setter and physical wall throughout a battle. Golem's selling point in Explosion and otherwise worse offensive presence mean that the user often has to sacrifice their Ground-type to leave a significant mark, leaving them more vulnerable to threats like Zapdos, Mega Beedrill, and Mega Aerodactyl and making Golem the less reliable option for this role overall.
