Strategy Overview

Golem is the premier Stealth Rock setter in the tier. Sturdy enables it to almost always set up Stealth Rock as well as check opposing Pokemon in an emergency. Sturdy also works well with its typing and Weakness Policy, granting it an easy boost and the ability to take down tougher foes. Golem's Normal-, Fire-, and Poison-type resistances and Electric-type immunity make it effective at checking Komala, Rapidash, Muk, and Choice-locked Electivire in a pinch. Its defensive set allows it to fill these roles even more effectively. Golem's powerful STAB attacks combined with its terrifying Attack stat allow it to OHKO Pokemon like Electivire unboosted and Pokemon like bulky Komala at +2. Choice Band allows Golem to pressure most of the defensive metagame with its almost unresisted STAB combination, including its most used answer, Bronzor. Unfortunately, Golem's weaknesses to Grass, Water, and Ice hinder it greatly, leaving it susceptible to special attackers such as Floatzel, Swanna, and Simisage. Furthermore, Golem's low Speed can be a large downfall, as faster Pokemon can easily nullify its Sturdy or clear entry hazards right after Golem sets them.
