Strategy Overview

Wailord finds its only niche in the PU metagame by PP stalling with Pressure and is otherwise outclassed by other Water-type pokemon like Jellicent and Carracosta that provide much better offensive utility. Wailord may possess a colossal HP stat, but this is offset by its meager defenses. This means it often finds itself unable to switch in well against a lot of strong wallbreakers such as Stoutland and Aggron and is setup bait for Pokemon like Leafeon and Dodrio. As a defensive Water-type, it is again outclassed by Jellicent, which provides a better defensive typing, an immunity to Water, and access to Taunt and Will-O-Wisp to reduce passivity and cripple physical attackers such as Crabominable. Wailord only warrants use on stall teams, but even on stall, Pyukumuku does a better job stalling than Wailord, since it can live longer and has a better recovery move in Recover.
