Strategy Overview
Dragon
Using Calm Mind, Recover, and Stored Power, Mega Latias can serve as an effective defensive sweeper for Dragon that tears through otherwise troublesome matchups such as Normal. With two extra resistances to Psychic and Fighting, Latias's Dragon / Psychic typing allows it to resist many types. This can allow it set up on Pokemon such as Mega Charizard Y, Chansey, and Mew. Furthermore, a useful Ground immunity allows Mega Latias to come in on Ground-type moves as well as avoid damage from Spikes and Toxic Spikes and the Speed drop from Sticky Web. However, Mega Latias is useless in the Dark matchup if its only attacking move is Stored Power, and while it can run Thunderbolt to not be walled by Dark-types, it then loses the ability to take on walls that run a status-inducing move. Furthermore, Mega Latias struggles to set up against teams with wallbreakers such as Diggersby, Mamoswine, and Bisharp, as they are able to switch in on a Calm Mind and threaten it out with a heavy attack. Mega Altaria gives Mega Latias competition as a Mega Evolution, as it is a Dragon Dance user with more immediate power thanks to Pixilate and a typing that aids in matchups like Dark, which Mega Latias cannot excel in. Mega Latias does, however, always win against Ditto, unlike Mega Altaria, which has to bank on the Ditto not running the appropriate happiness to maximize the power of Return or Frustration. It also helps take on Double Dance Mew due to Calm Mind and its resistance to Psychic, which is something Mega Altaria cannot do. Alternatively, Choice Scarf Latias can deal with fast Fighting-type Pokemon like Terrakion and Keldeo, Poison-types like Nihilego, and setup sweepers like Cloyster and it is used over Latios because of its access to the utility move Healing Wish. With Defog, it can also get entry hazards out of the way for its Stealth Rock-weak teammates like Kyurem-B and Dragonite. However, even with its high Speed with Choice Scarf, it still gets outpaced by Choice Scarf Greninja, a big threat to Dragon teams. Furthermore, outside of Healing Wish, Latias is outclassed by Latios as a Choice Scarf user due to it hitting harder and securing KOs that Latias cannot without Stealth Rock like against Heracross and Terrakion.
Psychic
High Speed and solid Special Attack, alongside an excellent movepool that includes the likes of Stored Power, Draco Meteor, and Calm Mind, make Latias a dangerous offensive threat. Its solid secondary Dragon typing grants key resistances to Water-, Fire-, and Electric-type attacks, which allows it to take on the likes of Heatran and Mega Swampert. Latias's access to Levitate also grants it a useful immunity to Ground-type attacks such as Earthquake, increasing Latias's setup chances and adding to its defensive utility in checking threats such as Landorus. With access to Calm Mind, Recover, and Stored Power, Mega Latias can function as a potent defensive setup sweeper, while Choice Scarf sets can act as an effective revenge killer, allowing Victini to run a different item, and bring valuable utility moves such as Defog, Trick, and Healing Wish to support the team. However, Latias's weaknesses to Ice-, Fairy-, and Dragon-type attacks increase pressure on teammates such as Victini and Jirachi to check these threats. Mega Latias is also weak to common status conditions such as paralysis and Toxic, which prevent it from effectively sweeping. Mega Latias has competition from other valuable Psychic-type Mega Evolutions such as Mega Gallade and Mega Slowbro, which can help Psychic out in its troublesome Dark-type matchup or take on physical attackers such as Diggersby, respectively. Choice Scarf Latias has difficulties with common defensive Pokemon due to Psychic's low power and Draco Meteor's Special Attack reduction, while Mega Latias has limited coverage and must pick what it beats.
