Strategy Overview
Ambipom is a very strong attacker that can take out the majority of the most prominent Pokemon in 1v1. Its base 115 Speed allows it to use an Adamant nature and still outspeed base 100 Pokemon such as Mega Charizard X, Mega Charizard Y, and Mega Gardevoir. Ambipom uses its powerful Normal-type STAB moves Fake Out and Giga Impact in conjunction with Normalium Z to overpower common bulky offense threats like Mega Charizard X and Dragonite. Its access to Tickle allows it to take on a more defensive role to take out threats such as Mega Gyarados and Incineroar. However, Ambipom suffers from its lack of coverage, since using any other moveset would trade important matchups for less significant ones. Its Normal-type moves are easily walled by Rock-, Steel-, and Ghost-types such as Crustle, Magearna, and Mega Aggron, and coverage moves like Low Sweep and Fire Punch are not strong enough to deal with this issue. Ambipom also lacks sufficient Speed and bulk to beat other faster threats in the metagame such as Mega Lopunny and Zeraora. Ambipom also needs an Adamant nature to win most of its dominant matchups, thus losing against otherwise outsped Pokemon like Garchomp and Jumpluff.
