Strategy Overview
Metagross can punch holes in opposing teams with its powerful Steel-type STAB attacks and coverage moves that cover many of its checks. Along with its direct offense, Metagross can passively damage foes with Stealth Rock and Toxic. It's also an excellent check to several dangerous Pokemon like Kyurem-B, Diancie, and Tapu Lele thanks to it resisting their STAB moves. Good teammates for Metagross include Tapu Fini, Rillaboom, and Kyurem-B. The former two check Urshifu-R and provide Terrain to let Metagross use Steel Roller. Tapu Fini and defensive Kyurem-B can both help check Heatran, and the latter two help check Landorus. In return, Metagross covers their respective weaknesses to Grass-types like Rillaboom, Ice-types like Kyurem-B, and Fairy-types like Tapu Fini. Metagross can also run Cosmic Power, turning into a fearsome bulky setup sweeper. Rillaboom provides Grassy Terrain healing and can produce free setup turns with Fake Out, making it the perfect partner for Cosmic Power Metagross. One of Metagross's main flaws is its middling Speed tier, meaning it often needs speed control from teammates. It always needs look out for strong Ground- and Fire-type moves coming from the likes of Zygarde, Landorus, Heatran, Volcanion, and Incineroar. Porygon2 can check Landorus and set Trick Room for Metagross, and Naganadel can check Zygarde, Landorus, and Volcanion while setting Tailwind. Metagross also barely damages Urshifu-R; Cosmic Power Metagross especially fears Surging Strikes, which can completely ignore its defensive boosts and 2HKO it.
