Sableye

Darkness Pokémon

DarkGhost

It’s a fiend for gemstones, so it stalks Carbink. Unfortunately, Gabite almost always grabs them first.

Strategy Overview

Dark

Mega Sableye's ability, Magic Bounce, allows it to shut down entry hazard setters such as Chansey and Ferrothorn and support teammates by switching in to prevent status such as Toxic. This is especially useful against bulkier teams, as Mega Sableye's teammates get worn down extremely easily without it. Access to Will-O-Wisp in conjunction with Prankster before it Mega Evolves also allows it to cripple physical attackers such as Mega Gallade and Landorus-T. Mega Sableye's Ghost typing gives it an important immunity to Fighting, which allows it to come in on Fighting-types such as Hawlucha and Terrakion and other Pokemon locked into Fighting-type attacks. Furthermore, Mega Sableye has solid defensive stats along with reliable recovery, allowing it to wall offensive threats such as Nidoking. It can also stall out bulky Pokemon such as Porygon2 and Mantine by running Toxic over Foul Play. Any entry hazards, though, especially Toxic Spikes, seriously compromise Mega Sableye's ability to wall Pokemon and provide utility. Mega Sableye's passive nature also allows Pokemon such as Calm Mind Suicune to set up on it and prevents it from doing much work against offensive teams. Mega Sableye is a huge momentum drain and can even have competition with other Mega Evolutions such as Mega Sharpedo for players hoping to keep up momentum. Mega Sharpedo can also wallbreak and can beat Fighting-types that Mega Sableye can't deal with such as Keldeo, and Mega Tyranitar can give you favorable matchups against Flying and Fairy. Pokemon immune to burn such as Volcarona and wallbreakers such as Mega Charizard Y can blow right past Mega Sableye.

Ghost

Mega Sableye serves as an exceptional mixed defensive wall for Ghost-type teams, and its bulk is complemented by reliable recovery in the form of Recover. Mega Sableye's incredible defensive stats allow it to take hard hits from powerful threats like Mega Sharpedo and Blacephalon and burn or KO them. Furthermore, an exceptional Dark / Ghost typing means that Mega Sableye provides Ghost teams with a Psychic immunity and takes neutral damage from the Ghost type's two main weaknesses: Ghost and Dark, allowing it to switch into Gengar and Alolan Muk. Mega Sableye's Magic Bounce ability allows it to reflect all forms of entry hazards and status moves, protecting its teammates from being withered down by residual damage. Before Mega Evolving, Sableye has the Prankster ability, which allows it to take advantage of its amazing utility moves like Will-O-Wisp to immediately neuter Pokemon like Scizor, and Mega Pinsir. However, Mega Sableye relies heavily on utility moves and lacks an offensive presence, which makes it susceptible to becoming setup bait for special sweepers that do not fear Will-O-Wisp, such as Suicune and Volcarona. Furthermore, although Mega Sableye has solid bulk, it is easily broken by the tier's most impressive wallbreakers like Mega Charizard Y and Tapu Koko. Mega Sableye's abysmal Speed prevents it from quickly burning threats or removing items from wallbreakers like Diggersby.
