Strategy Overview
- Pheromosa possesses many traits that enable it to threaten offensive threats in the Uber metagame. It has nearly unmatched Speed that lets it outspeed all Arceus formes, Mega Gengar, Ultra Necrozma, and Deoxys-A, which allows it to revenge kill or force switches, generate momentum with predictions by utilizing U-turn, and use coverage moves like Ice Beam to OHKO other foes like Zygarde and Mega Salamence.
- Although Pheromosa seems like a threatening attacker when factoring in Beast Boost, its decent offensive stats, and its ability to outspeed and OHKO many threats in the tier, there are a myriad of Pokemon that force flawless predictions for Pheromosa to be effective. Its disappointing STAB combination means that the very common Xerneas and Ghost-types limit Pheromosa's effectiveness by discouraging it from using its stronger attacks.
- Even accounting for its ability to avoid unfavorable matchups with U-turn and circumvent some of its checks with certain coverage moves, Pheromosa is a rather underwhelming Pokemon when it is considered as a fast, frail attacker to trouble offensive teams. Deoxys-A has far better offensive capabilities, being able to threaten and even outright OHKO more foes with its more powerful STAB options and overcoming its inability to pivot with its much narrower defensive counterplay.
- Other offensive Pokemon like Marshadow and Choice Scarf users like Xerneas and Yveltal prove to be far better anti-offense staples than Pheromosa; Marshadow is much more difficult to switch into, picks off weakened foes with Shadow Sneak, and checks certain setup users with Spectral Thief, while the aforementioned Choice Scarf users are better at generating predictable reactions from an opponent and also possess utility options that will retain their usefulness when their offensive presence is limited.
- Pheromosa's strength fails to outshine its crippling drawbacks due to the competition it faces with the mentioned offensive Pokemon. The likelihood it will secure its place in teams is further limited by its abysmal bulk, which will make it impossible to make a safe switch into any foes without taking heavy damage or getting KOed. This frailty also causes Pheromosa to fall victim to most priority moves and prevents it from utilizing marginally useful utility moves like Rapid Spin and Taunt and rarely distributed moves like Quiver Dance.
- Pheromosa already has a considerable amount of risk when against offensive teams where it holds a miniscule, outclassed niche, and it additionally struggles against defensive teams due to foes like Ho-Oh, Toxapex, and Mega Sableye.
- Despite its offensive stats and movepool that give it a decent matchup against offensive teams, offensively threaten many Dark-types, and threaten teams with loose checks to Fighting-types, Pheromosa generally struggles to justify its place on most teams due to its reliance on prediction and general opportunity cost from its use.
