Strategy Overview
-
With an extremely high Defense stat and access to the coveted IronPress combination, Registeel serves the role of the format's late-game sweeper. Steel is an incredibly good typing defensively, and Clear Body stops Intimidate from the likes of Incineroar, which could otherwise prevent the OHKO on Flutter Mane with Heavy Slam.
-
Registeel fits best on balance teams that feature its favorite partners. Incineroar and Amoonguss can slow down the pace of the game, Latias provides crucial speed control in Tailwind, and Rillaboom's Grassy Surge and Fake Out is appreciated by Registeel. Additionally, Latias and Rillaboom threaten Urshifu-R. Similarly, Raging Bolt is also a good Registeel partner, being the premier Urshifu-R counter in the format.
-
Notable good matchups for Registeel include Rillaboom and Ogerpon-W, both of which get cleanly 2HKOed by Body Press after a single Iron Defense boost. Kingambit also does poorly against Registeel, as Swords Dance can be mitigated by Iron Defense and Body Press hits Kingambit very hard if it does not Terastallize.
-
However, not all physical attackers are helpless against the IronPress Registeel. Both Urshifu formes can pose a threat, depending on Registeel's choice of Tera type. Chien-Pao can threaten heavy damage with Sacred Sword if Registeel has not used Terastallization. Gholdengo is also a hard counter to Registeel, as it is immune to Body Press and resists Heavy Slam while also being able to set up with Nasty Plot and break through Registeel's high bulk.
