Strategy Overview

With a variety of coverage moves like Ice Beam and Thunderbolt alongside a great Speed tier to outrun top UU Pokemon like Keldeo, Nihilego, and Salamence, Starmie is a solid offensive threat in the UU metagame, being able to threaten nearly the entire tier for super effective damage and 2HKO most of it. Starmie's wide coverage allows it to force many switches, and its ability Analytic severely punishes nearly all of them. Starmie's access to Recover also allows it to use its typing to check common foes like Celesteela and Keldeo throughout a game. However, while Starmie's Analytic-boosted attacks can hit exceptionally hard, Starmie's unboosted attacks are not too powerful and can be shrugged off by many Pokemon like Scizor, Rotom-W, Chansey, and Assault Vest Tangrowth. Furthermore, Starmie is prone to being worn down by entry hazards and Life Orb recoil, forcing it to use Recover more than it would like and limiting its effectiveness as a wallbreaker. Starmie's vulnerable typing and frailty causes it to be easily revenge killed by common Choice Scarf users like Diggersby and Hydreigon. While slower, Keldeo is stronger and doesn't rely on Life Orb to do damage, making it the preferred option on more teams. Still, Starmie's Speed lends it a valuable place on teams that need it.
