Strategy Overview

Ground

Garchomp is a powerful wallbreaker and setup sweeper thanks to Swords Dance and Scale Shot. Swords Dance allows Garchomp to destroy defensive teams, while Scale Shot allows it to gain Speed and clean through more offensive teams. It can easily set up with Swords Dance thanks to its good natural bulk. Garchomp's Speed tier allows it to excel as a cleaner and wallbreaker, taking on threats such as Urshifu-R, Kyurem, Mimikyu, Mew, and Tapu Fini. Its Dragon typing helps it tank Water- and Grass-type attacks from threats such as Rillaboom and Urshifu-R, which potentially allows Garchomp to stop a sweep. While its Speed tier and Dragon typing offer a lot, they still leave Garchomp vulnerable to common threats such as Weavile, Zarude, and Latios and compound a Ground team's natural weakness to Ice-type attacks.

Dragon

Garchomp's well rounded stat distribution, STAB coverage, and access to Stealth Rock play a pivotal role on Dragon teams and their naturally aggressive playstyle. Its Ground typing is very much appreciated against Steel- and Poison-types such as Aegislash. Because Garchomp is used primarily for Stealth Rock support, its moveset is rather linear and simple to play around if pressured correctly.
