Strategy Overview
Although it is completely outclassed by Florges and Aromatisse in a purely defensive role, Clefairy can function as a pivot on some bulky offense teams, offering utility that other Pokemon cannot provide. In particular, its access to Thunder Wave and Healing Wish make it stand out from other Fairy-types as a supporter for offensive teams. Due to its immunity to passive damage by virtue of Magic Guard and reliable recovery in Soft-Boiled, Clefairy can stay healthy enough to check what it needs to throughout a game. With Special Defense investment, Clefairy performs well as a check to certain special attackers, such as Kyurem and Mega Blastoise, that can give most bulky offense teams trouble. Access to additional utility moves in Stealth Rock and Encore and a generally open fourth moveslot mean that it can customize its moveset to perform exactly the role its team needs it to. However, even with Eviolite, Clefairy suffers from rather poor bulk and is 2HKOed by many physical attackers. In addition, it's complete setup fodder for many bulky setup sweepers, such as Reuniclus and Snorlax, if it lacks Encore. Clefairy is taken advantage of by many offensive Pokemon such as Nidoqueen and Mega Swampert as well. Thus, Clefairy is often not worth using in favor of other Fairy-types, though its niche makes it a good choice on certain teams.
