Strategy Overview

Avalugg is a great wall on Ice teams thanks to its incredible Defense allowing it to tank physical attacks from Pokemon like Excadrill and Mega Sharpedo, utility in Rapid Spin, and access to Recover. Furthermore, Sturdy allows it to survive an OHKO and use Rapid Spin or attack with Avalanche. Avalugg can also phaze threatening setup sweepers like Mega Scizor and Volcarona that will attempt to use it as fodder. Unfortunately, its pure Ice typing doesn't contribute much to Ice teams, compounding a weakness to Stealth Rock and Steel-, Fire-, and Fighting-types like Magnezone, Heatran, Victini, and Mega Gallade. Its lack of coverage moves and inability to normally run Toxic leave it walled by opposing defensive Pokemon like Porygon2, Jellicent, and Skarmory. Avalugg's poor special bulk also causes any special attack to wear it down to a great extent.
