Strategy Overview
Fighting
Terrakion is a great revenge killer for Fighting, as its high Attack, great Speed tier, and useful STAB combination allow it to take out many threats to the type such as Mega Pinsir and Tapu Koko. Terrakion's high Speed tier allows it to naturally outspeed many fast threats such as Mega Pinsir, Blacephalon, and Nihilego with full Speed investment and a Jolly nature. Thanks to its respectable Attack stat and two powerful STAB moves in Stone Edge and Close Combat, Terrakion can be a great offensive threat against Bug, Flying, and Fire teams. Its movepool also allows it to utilize useful coverage moves such as Earthquake, Iron Head, and Poison Jab, allowing it to deal with a wide variety of Pokemon, with some notable examples being Tapu Koko, Mega Diancie, and Tapu Bulu. Terrakion can also utilize a Swords Dance set with Rockium Z to wallbreak against types like Flying, Psychic, and Water. Rock Polish lets it threaten offensive types like Electric. Substitute can be used to take advantage of forced switches and protect it from status moves. This combined with its Rock typing allows Terrakion to take a few Flying-type attacks, which is key against types like Bug and Flying. Terrakion also has decent bulk and can take neutral hits from Pokemon such as Tapu Koko and Mega Pidgeot. Despite its defensive merits, though, Terrakion's typing leaves it weak to other common types like Water and Ground. Even with its high-powered STAB moves and Attack stat, Terrakion cannot break past Pokemon such as Skarmory and Mega Venusaur due to their high Defense. Along with most its teammates, Terrakion is highly crippled by any status ailment, as they always hinder its ability to effectively sweep and revenge kill.
Rock
Terrakion is a necessary asset to Rock teams thanks to the plethora of benefits it offers as a sweeper and wallbreaker. With its Rock / Fighting typing, it sports an incredible STAB combination capable of hitting a large portion of the metagame for neutral damage. Fighting STAB in particular makes it a formidable asset in the Normal and Steel matchups. It also has access to helpful coverage in Earthquake, Poison Jab, and Iron Head in order to hit threats like Nidoking, Tapu Bulu, and Mega Diancie, respectively. A base 108 Speed tier allows Terrakion to outspeed important threats like Hydreigon and Volcarona, and with a Choice Scarf, it's also capable of removing faster threats such as Mega Lopunny, +1 Mega Sharpedo, and Sand Rush Excadrill after Sticky Web. With the ability Justified, Terrakion can discourage opposing teams from using Dark-type attacks such as Knock Off, since they'll increase Terrakion's Attack stat. With a Choice Band, Terrakion is capable of being a potent wallbreaker against balance types such as Normal and Steel and is also able to revenge kill priority users such as Azumarill and Breloom with Quick Attack. Unfortunately, Terrakion's typing is awful defensively, leaving it vulnerable to common attacking types like Water, Ground, Fighting, and Psychic. This also means that it's highly susceptible to common priority attacks like Aqua Jet and Bullet Punch. Furthermore, Terrakion's mediocre bulk prevents it from surviving many hits from most powerful attackers, and despite its great Speed stat, it's still vulnerable to common revenge killers like Excadrill in sand if Sticky Web isn't up and Choice Scarf Latios.
