Strategy Overview

  • Gothorita is one of the unique picks in Ubers due to its ability to remove and neutralize passive and problematic Pokemon with Shadow Tag.
  • Though Gothorita is an alternative Shadow Tag trapper that performs the same role as Gothitelle, it has superior bulk with Eviolite. This gives Gothorita the ability to trap more powerful foes that Gothitelle cannot.
  • Some Pokemon like Choice Scarf Xerneas and, if running Defense investment, defensive Ho-Oh are vulnerable to Gothorita. Gothorita will therefore have more usefulness against some balanced and offensive teams, unlike Gothitelle, which tends to rely on the number of a slower and weaker Pokemon present on the other team to be effective.
  • As a Pokemon that aims to switch into and neutralize passive foes, Gothorita may seem like a superior performer of this role due to its better marginal bulk. However, the process of neutralizing a Pokemon takes long enough for Gothitelle's Leftovers to outweigh the helpfulness of the additional bulk that Gothorita gains from Eviolite.
  • Gothorita's lack of Leftovers also demands players to be more cautious when bringing it into the field, as switching into the field with entry hazards at a wrong time makes taking advantage of its higher bulk more difficult. The lack of Leftovers also makes the matchup against Pokemon like Ferrothorn, Celesteela, and Mega Venusaur more difficult, as Gothitelle can mitigate the damage at the end of each turn with Leftovers, while Gothorita will take more sizable damage from Leech Seed each turn and thus spend more time and PP to successfully neutralize them.
  • Better bulk doesn't help too much with Gothorita's tendency to rely on matchups to be effective; Gothorita is still a risky Pokemon to employ due to its helplessness against most offensive teams.
