Strategy Overview

With great physical bulk, reliable recovery, and access to Rapid Spin, Avalugg can find itself a niche role on stall teams in the ZU metagame. Thanks to its sky-high Defense stat, Avalugg can stomach hits from a variety of physical attackers in the tier including Pinsir, Choice Band Komala, and Torterra. Rapid Spin allows it to remove entry hazards for the team, especially against certain Stealth Rock users such as Torterra, Sandslash, Marowak, and Gabite due to its great matchup versus them. However, since Avalugg is a grounded pure Ice-type, it is weak to entry all forms of entry hazards, especially Stealth Rock, and is unable to beat entry hazard setters such as Mawile, Bronzor, and Explosion Golem, thus not making it the best form of entry hazard removal in the tier. In addition, its extremely low Special Defense stat leaves it vulnerable to special attackers such as Combusken, Swanna, and Electivire. Avalugg faces tough competition as a form of entry hazard removal, as Sandslash and Komala provide better role compression and are not weak to Stealth Rock. Lastly, Avalugg is only truly viable on stall teams and requires a considerable amount of support from its teammates, such as a special wall like Bronzor, to take special hits for it.
