Strategy Overview

Dragon

Dragonite is a powerful wallbreaker and setup sweeper thanks to its high Attack stat and access to Dragon Dance. Its Multiscale ability paired with Heavy-Duty Boots allows it to check many Pokemon, since it can withstand nearly any attack from full HP. It has solid coverage options in Earthquake and Fire Punch to hit Pokemon such as Heatran and Celesteela, respectively, and access to a strong priority move in Extreme Speed to pick off weakened foes. However, Extreme Speed can't fully compensate for Dragonite's mediocre Speed even after setting up. At +1, it is left outsped by fast Pokemon such as Zeraora and Dragapult if running an Adamant nature, and many Choice Scarf users even with Jolly. Once it has revealed its moveset, it becomes easier to check, as, if it's lacking Earthquake, it gets walled by Heatran and neutered by Haze Toxapex, whereas without Fire Punch it can't touch Pokemon such as Celesteela and Ferrothorn. Dragonite may also struggle to find safe opportunities to switch in because it risks getting its Multiscale broken.

Flying

Multiscale allows Dragonite to tank most unboosted hits from full health, and Heavy-Duty Boots keeps it from getting chipped by Stealth Rock; this endurance makes Dragonite a fearsome setup sweeper. Extreme Speed allows it to revenge kill faster offensive threats to Flying-type teams, such as Alolan Raichu and Kingdra. Flying-type teams also appreciate its part-Dragon typing, which gives it many notable resistances, including Water and Fire against Pokemon such as Urshifu-R, Volcarona, and Victini. It also gives a neutrality to Electric. However, Dragonite has very limited opportunities to safely switch into the field due to the risk of breaking Multiscale. It is susceptible to status conditions such as burn and poison, which easily break Multiscale. Dragonite also struggles with breaking through walls such as Slowbro, Galarian Weezing, and Galarian Corsola, as they can threaten to burn it.
