Strategy Overview
Water
Mantine's superb Special Defense and HP stats and access to utility moves such as Defog, Haze, and Roost make it a great wall on Water balance teams, taking on foes such as Volcarona, Hydreigon, and Hatterene. It can form a potent defensive core with Pokemon such as Swampert, Slowking, and Toxapex. Mantine's Flying typing provides a key neutrality to Grass as well as an immunity to Ground; this makes it effective against foes such as Swampert and Choice Scarf Excadrill locked into Earthquake, which its teammates appreciate. It's held back by its its 4x weakness to Electric, making it susceptible to Pokemon such as Victini and Nidoking that carry Electric-type coverage. Mantine's passivity also leads to a tremendous loss of momentum whenever it enters the field. Special wallbreakers such as Choice Specs Tapu Lele and Choice Specs Zapdos take advantage of this, being able to freely switch in on Mantine and release powerful attacks that can severely damage Mantine or its teammates.
Flying
Mantine is a solid Defogger for Flying teams due to its immunity to Water-type moves and access to Haze and Roost. Furthermore, Mantine's high Special Defence allows it to pivot into threats like Blacephalon, Choice Scarf Tapu Fini, and Tapu Lele. Mantine notably is the only Water absorber on Flying, checking offensive Water-types like Urshifu-R and Barraskewda. However, Mantine is extremely passive and is threatened by offensive Pokemon such as Bisharp, Zapdos, and Kyurem. Mantine also faces competition with other Defoggers like Tornadus-T and Corviknight because of its lack of momentum.
