Strategy Overview
Gastrodon is an incredible mixed wall for balance teams due to its incredible typing and access to Recover. Its ability in Storm Drain gives it an important Water immunity that allows it to switch into threats such as Rotom-W and scout Keldeo with a Choice item, while Gastrodon's stellar typing lets it reliably switch into most Fire- and Electric-type Pokemon not running specific coverage for it such as Rotom-H, Thundurus-T, and Chandelure. It additionally serves as a consistent answer to Nidoking. Gastrodon, however, carries a quadruple weakness to Grass, leaving it taken advantage of by Grass-type Pokemon such as Tangrowth and Amoonguss. Zarude in particular is very problematic as Jungle Healing prevents it from being crippled by Toxic or a Scald burn. Gastrodon is also vulnerable to coverage from threats such as Nihilego with Grass Knot and Gyarados with Power Whip. Gastrodon is also rather passive due to its mediocre attacking stats, it relies heavily on status to make progress in games against bulkier teams, and struggles to stop setup sweepers such as Kommo-o and Gyarados. Gastrodon is also crippled by status, as it bleeds into its longevity, with Toxic specifically forcing it to leave the field often to avoid being taken out by chip.
