Strategy Overview

Thanks to its wide variety of coverage moves, access to Dragon Dance, an incredible ability in Multiscale, and great utility moves in Roost and Heal Bell, Dragonite can function as a threatening sweeper, defensive wall, and in some cases, even both. Dragonite's endless amount of coverage moves allow it to hit Pokemon that can otherwise check it, like Landorus-T and Zapdos. Dragonite's Dragon / Flying typing also allows it to switch in on many different Pokemon, such as Blacephalon, Blaziken, Urshifu-R, Heatran, and Rillaboom while also being able to use Roost to check them long-term. However, Dragonite is weak to Pokemon like Weavile, Tapu Lele, and Dragapult, as Weavile can easily OHKO it with Triple Axel, whereas Tapu Lele and Dragapult can 2HKO it with Moonblast and Draco Meteor, respectively. Dragonite is also heavily reliant on its Heavy-Duty Boots to function properly, as it is weak to Stealth Rock.
