Strategy Overview
Rhyperior stands out as an Electric-immune Pokemon and Stealth Rock user, as it is one of the few defensive Ground-types available, while also having the benefit of being a Flying-type resist. It has a stronger offensive presence than Swampert and more defensive utility than Nidoqueen and Krookodile with its typing that allows it to switch into Rotom-H, Crobat, Togekiss, and Salamence. Its unique Solid Rock ability also allows it to blanket check a good portion of the metagame, stomaching strong super effective hits like Bullet Punch from Scizor and Earthquake from Diggersby. Its STAB moves have reliable coverage for a majority of the metagame, covering Pokemon like Thundurus-T, Crobat, and Galarian Slowbro hard and threatening common entry hazard removers such as Salamence and Rotom-H. However, it remains vulnerable to common Grass-, Water-, and Fighting-types such as Zarude, Primarina, and Keldeo, which threaten to KO it with little to no chip. Regenerator users like Tangrowth, Slowking, and Amoonguss are annoying too, as they can take a majority of Rhyperior's attacks just to heal off with a switch or immediately pressure it with a STAB attack. Powerful wallbreakers like Nidoking, Mamoswine, Conkeldurr, and Hydreigon can muscle past Rhyperior easily, taking advantage of its reliance on Leftovers for recovery. Rhyperior faces severe competition from other Stealth Rock setters like Excadrill and Nihilego who provide better defensive utility because of their typings and check more relevant threats. Hippowdon in particular largely outclasses Hippowdon thanks to its access to Slack Off, allowing it to consistently check foes like Salamence, as well as offset Spikes damage. It only being 2x weak to Grass- and Water-types means it can afford to stay in against foes like Tangrowth and Rotom-W and cripple them with Toxic, something Rhyperior cannot do.
