Mareanie acts as a defensive pivot for balance teams. It can check special attacking threats such as Charizard, Ribombee, and Jellicent while providing team support by setting and absorbing Toxic Spikes. Mareanie's wide utility movepool can also make it annoying to switch into, though its general passivity makes it vulnerable to setup sweepers and strong attackers such as Sandslash.
