Strategy Overview

Ground

Hippowdon is an invaluable teammate on sand-based Ground teams thanks to its ability to automatically set sand, notably supporting a dangerous teammate in Excadrill. On top of that, its good physical bulk and useful utility options in Stealth Rock, Slack Off, and Whirlwind make it a good check to physical attackers like Garchomp, Dragapult, and Cinderace. However, Hippowdon's weaknesses to Water, Grass, and Ice leave it susceptible to attackers like Barraskewda, Rillaboom, and Kyurem. It's also overwhelmed by powerful special attackers like Tapu Lele, Choice Specs Dragapult, and Hydreigon due to its average Special Defense. Due to its reliance on Earthquake in order to deal damage, Hippowdon is typically passive and taken advantage of Taunt users like Zarude and Tapu Fini while being unable to damage Flying-types like Landorus-T, Corviknight, and Celesteela.
