Strategy Overview
With its unique typing, well-rounded stats, and wide movepool, Kommo-o presents itself as an incredibly versatile force to be reckoned with in the OU tier. Its solid coverage, utility options, and item selection can be customized to cater to its team's needs, allowing it to fulfill several different roles. Its signature Z-Move, Clangorous Soulblaze, turns Kommo-o into one of the scariest late-game cleaners in the tier, as its one-time use boosts all of its stats, which makes it a very effective mixed attacker and harder to revenge kill. Alternatively, it can utilize a Dragon Dance set, which can boost more than once and makes room for Kommo-o to run another Z-Crystal. Kommo-o's Speed stat lets it get the jump on Dragonite before a boost and faster Pokemon like Mega Lopunny and Mega Alakazam after a boost. Its unique typing and solid defensive stats allow it to resist priority moves like Sucker Punch and Water Shuriken and serve as a solid answer to Mega Tyranitar, Heatran, and especially Ash-Greninja. However, Kommo-o's typing leaves it with a crippling 4x weakness to Fairy, which is everywhere in the tier, as well as attacking types like Ice and Psychic. To make Kommo-o's weakness to Fairy-types worse, they can block Clangorous Soulblaze and potentially prevent it from cleaning up late-game. Additionally, it is outpaced by common Pokemon like Tapu Koko and Mega Alakazam before a boost and Choice Scarf users like Landorus-T and Kartana after a boost. Furthermore, Kommo-o can't fit all of the coverage and utility it wants into one set; for instance, the Kommonium Z variant has a much harder time against Fairy-types if it doesn't have Poison Jab, can't do much to Steel-types like Skarmory and Mega Scizor without Flamethrower, and is vulnerable to status and phazing without Taunt, while the Dragon Dance set has trouble dealing with Toxapex without Earthquake.
