Strategy Overview

Psychic

Jirachi is an excellent defensive Pokemon with one of the best available secondary typings in Steel, letting it provide Psychic teams with a solid set of resistances that includes Fairy and Steel, a Poison immunity, and a vital Bug-type neutrality, which Psychic generally lacks on defensive Pokemon. Base 100 stats across the board let Jirachi act as an incredible defensive asset for Psychic teams, especially when utilizing U-turn. U-turn specifically lets Jirachi act as a slow, defensive pivot in order to safely bring in teammates and get favorable matchups. Thanks to its Poison immunity, Jirachi is able to avoid Toxic, which makes it an incredibly effective defensive Pokemon on Psychic. Due to its rather vast movepool and expansive utility kit, which includes Healing Wish, Stealth Rock, Thunder Wave, Toxic, and Wish, Jirachi can fill a multitude of roles on Psychic teams, including a Stealth Rock setter, status spreader, and strong pivot. Jirachi's ability, Serene Grace, gives it the opportunity to take down slower opposing Pokemon with Iron Head's doubled flinch rate, especially if paired with Thunder Wave. However, Jirachi is plagued by being limited to four moveslots, which limits the number of roles it can effectively fill on Psychic.

Steel

Jirachi is a good offensive option on Steel teams thanks to its good typing, great all-around stats, and access to a great setup move in Z-Happy Hour. This combination of traits allows it to help Steel in important matchups like Poison and Water. Z-Happy Hour also allows Jirachi to function as a great late-game cleaner, boosting all of its stats by one stage and allowing it to shrug off many revenge killers due to its increased defenses. Jirachi's Psychic typing grants it a neutrality to Fighting and gives Steel a reliable answer to threatening Poison-types such as Mega Venusaur and Toxapex thanks to its super effective STAB moves. Jirachi also has the option to utilize a bulky Calm Mind set and pose as a sturdier sweeper, taking advantage of defensive cores to set up and break Water- and Flying-type teams with more reliability compared to the Z-Happy Hour set with its one-time boost. Additionally, Jirachi's above-average bulk for an offensive Pokemon alongside good coverage options such as Thunderbolt also allows it to threaten more defensive types such as Water and Flying. However, Jirachi finds itself overly dependent on Z-Happy Hour in order to dent teams, as its damage output leaves a lot to be desired when unboosted due to its mediocre offensive stats. In addition to this, Z-Happy Hour can be rather risky and unreliable due to the fact it only works once throughout the game. Calm Mind Jirachi is vulnerable to fast revenge killers such as Landorus-T and does not immediately threaten teams. Jirachi can also be difficult to fit on teams, since it competes for a teamslot with Steel's many other offensive options such as Magnezone and Bisharp.
