Strategy Overview

While Avalugg does sport certain positive traits like reliable recovery, a colossal Defense stat, and access to Rapid Spin, it's an unviable Pokemon. Avalugg's terrible mono-Ice typing leaves it with a Stealth Rock weakness, no useful resistances, and several crippling weaknesses, while its low Special Defense stat makes it very weak to most special attackers. Additionally, Avalugg is a bad entry hazard remover, as it's extremely vulnerable to every hazard and can't beat common entry hazard setters such as Aggron and Qwilfish. It's also extremely vulnerable to poison and burns, and, thanks to its rock bottom Speed stat, it's vulnerable to Taunt from omnipresent Pokemon such as Jellicent, which can also spinblock it. Because of these facts, Avalugg faces hopeless amounts of competition as an entry hazard remover from Pokemon such as Alolan Sandslash and Skuntank, which actually fit on teams and provide far more utility than Avalugg.
