Strategy Overview

  • Metagross serves as a good defensive Pokemon on balance teams thanks to its great defenses that are bolstered even further by Assault Vest, its good ability, and its nice defensive typing against foes like Raging Bolt and Iron Crown. Its access to coverage and high Attack stat make it appreciated as an offensive threat too.

  • Metagross can pair well with offensive Pokemon like Flutter Mane and Landorus, which can help deal with the Dark-, Ghost-, and Fire-types that threaten it like Urshifu-S, Gholdengo, and Entei. Another excellent partner can be Ogerpon-W, which has great synergy with Metagross, being able to deal with Ground-types like Landorus and redirect Sucker Punch from Chien-Pao, while Metagross can help Ogerpon-W against Rillaboom and Raging Bolt.

  • Before Terastallizing, Metagross can be overwhelmed by Pokemon like Kingambit, Chi-Yu, and Entei, making defensive partners like Amoonguss and Incineroar appreciated. Rillaboom can also be a good teammate for Metagross, providing it with passive recovery and utility via Grassy Terrain and Fake Out, respectively.
