Strategy Overview

Mawile is a unique Pokemon in NU, as it has a great ability in Sheer Force boosting the power of both its STAB moves and its coverage moves. Mawile is a great wallbreaker, able to lure in and break down walls for other teammates to sweep, and it can be a pain for defensive teams to handle because of its inability to be worn down by Life Orb recoil and its powerful STAB moves and coverage allowing it to easily break past defensive cores. Mawile can also make use of its typing and Intimidate to be an effective wall versus the likes of Shiftry, Liepard, and Skuntank. However, Mawile is slow and frail without any investment in bulk, meaning its offensive set has to rely on Sucker Punch against faster teams, and its poor bulk means that even resisted hits can do a significant amount of damage, preventing Mawile from utilizing its resistances, most of which are of specially based attacking types. It also faces competition from other wallbreakers such as Samurott and Magmortar, which can provide more defensive utility to a team with their better Speed, bulk or defensive typings. Defensively, it also faces competition with Steelix as it has much better defensive stats, letting it more effectively utilize its set of resistances.
