Strategy Overview
Vigoroth is a fantastic defensive sweeper. Thanks to its great bulk and access to reliable recovery, common offensive Pokemon such as Golem and Choice Scarf Electivire can't 2HKO Vigoroth and therefore are rendered setup fodder. Vigoroth only needs a few EVs to outspeed Monferno and common defensive Pokémon such as Altaria and Probopass. This, coupled with Taunt or Substitute, allows Vigoroth to use them as setup fodder as well. However although Vigoroth's bulk is great, if it loses its Eviolite, Vigoroth becomes more specially frail, and giving it a harder time setting up and making it easier to revenge kill. Vigoroth faces competition from the several other Normal-types in ZU, most notably Bulk Up Komala, which, despite being worse at defensive sweping, is far more versatile. Also, Vigoroth doesn't benefit from its pure Normal typing, which doesn't bring it any useful resistances. Vigoroth also can't afford to run anything other than a Normal STAB move as an attack and therefore needs several Attack boosts to break through Pokemon that resist Normal such as Bronzor and Probopass. In addition, Vigoroth is unable to touch Ghost-types such as Gourgeist-XL and Misdreavus and relies on PP stall to beat them. Since Vigoroth needs several turns to set up, it is unable to perform its role if it gets poisoned, making it very vulnerable to Toxic Spikes. Vigoroth is also vulnerable to Trick / Switcheroo from Choice item users, which locks it into one move and prevents it from setting up.
