Strategy Overview

Pyukumuku is the only viable Pokemon in PU to hold the Unaware ability, and stands its ground as a particularly useful pick for stall teams by using this niche to easily handle a variety of threatening setup sweepers that would ordinarily present a tough challenge for the archetype, including but not limited to Simisear, Omastar, and Alolan Sandslash. In addition to Unaware, access to Block and Recover allows Pyukumuku to distinguish itself from other bulky Water-types like Jellicent and Lanturn by threatening to immediately remove defensive Pokemon like Altaria and Regirock with Spite or Toxic, while its competition can only force them out at best. However, Pyukumuku has no offensive presence whatsoever, and is reliant on residual damage to take out its foes. As a result, Pyukumuku and its benefits are restricted to stall teams, as other archetypes are unable to offer suitable support to cover Pyukumuku's passive nature and weakness to various strong breakers. Pyukumuku is also unable to take on any Taunt users and struggles to defeat Pokemon behind a Substitute, especially when not running Spite. As a result, other bulky Water-types such as Jellicent and Poliwrath are far superior outside of stall builds, using unique utility options in Will-O-Wisp, Scald and Circle Throw to whittle down the same offensive threats that Pyukumuku is unable to touch.
