Strategy Overview

With solid Attack and Speed stats and the ability to boost all its stats with Z-Celebrate, Leafeon can make for a fearsome sweeper. Solid natural physical bulk and a decent defensive typing allow it to set up on a variety of Pokemon, such as Golem and non-Ice Beam Silvally-Fighting, as well as avoid being revenge killed by non-Flamethrower Electivire, while its aforementioned Speed allows Leafeon to outspeed or Speed tie with most common Choice Scarf users, such as Electivire and Mr. Mime, after setting up. Access to Swords Dance and Knock Off means Leafeon can also function as a wallbreaker, easily getting past Pokemon like Bronzor and Pyukumuku. However, other than those moves, Leafeon's movepool is shallow and its offensive typing is bad, leaving it walled by common Pokemon like Gourgeist-XL and Altaria before setting up. Leafeon also has awful special bulk, meaning it cannot set up on any special attackers, such as Zebstrika, and easily gets revenge killed by specially offensive Choice Scarf users even after setting up, including Swanna and Simisear. The fact that it needs a Z-Move to set up means that it cannot pair with another Z-Move user, which limits teambuilding. In addition, it means Leafeon can only set up once, leaving it very vulnerable to phazing. Lastly, Leafeon faces competition as an offensive Grass-type from Sawsbuck, which has a secondary STAB move, better abilities, and access to Jump Kick, though Leafeon carves itself a niche with Z-Celebrate, Knock Off, and its great Defense.
