Strategy Overview
Thanks to its excellent ability and amazing Attack stat, Komala is a great Pokemon in the ZU metagame, especially since its access to a powerful STAB move in Return and good coverage moves like Earthquake and Knock Off makes it quite a nuisance to switch into. Utility moves like U-turn, Rapid Spin, Toxic, and Wish also allow it to offer a variety of support to its team, which is bolstered by good special bulk combined with only a single weakness, making it challenging to take down. In addition, setup moves like Bulk Up and Swords Dance allow it to break through Pokemon that otherwise wall it and add to its already incredible versatility and unpredictability. Komala especially excels at beating defensive builds thanks to its immunity to status because of Comatose.
Unfortunately, Komala suffers from underwhelming Speed and low physical bulk, leaving it to easily succumb to offensive pressure and causing it to struggle against more offensive builds. The very common Colbur Berry Gourgeist-XL is also hard for Komala to break through, although it can be worn down with repeated uses of U-turn. Lastly, Komala faces some competition from other Normal-types like Bouffalant, Kecleon, and Lickilicky, though its status immunity and great movepool mean that it generally outshines them.
