Strategy Overview

Ground

Excadrill is the premier Sand Rush sweeper on Ground teams and possesses equally valued revenge killing potential thanks to its amazing Attack stat. Sand Rush doubles its semi-decent Speed in sand, allowing it to make full use of its wallbreaking potential and making it nearly impossible to revenge kill. Excadrill can also choose to run Choice Scarf sets on teams not utilizing sand, taking on the role of a fast revenge killer. Its other viable ability, Mold Breaker, lets it hit Rotom-W, which is a huge threat to Ground teams, and bypass Sturdy. It gets two strong STAB attacks in Earthquake and Iron Head and has access to coverage like X-Scissor and Rock Slide, forming a pseudo-EdgeQuake combination. Furthermore, it gets Rapid Spin, making it the only viable Pokemon that can remove entry hazards on Ground teams. To further improve its set diversity, Excadrill also has the potential to run a Swords Dance + Z-Move set, allowing it to break through walls such as Gliscor. Excadrill's Steel typing makes it an excellent offensive check to Ice-types that also takes neutral damage from Grass-type moves. However, after getting up sand, the player is sometimes forced to make sacrifices in order to bring Excadrill in, which can result in a huge loss of momentum. Furthermore, Excadrill's Speed isn't amazing outside of sand, leaving it vulnerable to revenge killers. Its typing leaves it weak to quite a few priority moves, including Mach Punch and Aqua Jet. Overall, Excadrill is a necessity on any offensive sand team and effectively performs the role of a revenge killer on non-sand teams.

Steel

Excadrill claims the spot of the premier Choice Scarf user on Steel teams due to its excellent Ground / Steel typing. This allows it to revenge kill threatening Fire-types like Rotom-H and Entei along with Electric-types like Xurkitree and Tapu Koko, even being capable of preventing Volt Switch. Further complementing its typing is its excellent offensive movepool. It gets access to superb STAB moves in Earthquake and Iron Head along with Rock Slide as a coverage move that enables it to hit Flying-types like Mantine and Zapdos, which are otherwise capable of taking its STAB moves with ease. Its movepool also grants it Rapid Spin, making it an excellent suicide entry hazard remover, outspeeding and locking itself into Rapid Spin before letting the foe KO it. Its ability Mold Breaker lets Excadrill hit Levitate users, especially Rotom-W, with Earthquake. Bar its immunity to Electric, however, Excadrill's typing fails to bring much else to the table defensively, only adding a weakness to Water, which Steel teams are already vulnerable to. Its damage output isn't very impressive either. Excadrill fails to break through defensive walls like Slowbro and Skarmory and needs team support to take care of such walls before cleaning late-game. Lastly, even when equipped with a Choice Scarf, its Speed is lacking, and it gets outsped by most other Choice Scarf users, such as Victini and Gengar.
