Strategy Overview
Dragon
Dragonite is the most powerful physical wallbreaker available to Dragon thanks to its high Attack and great coverage options. It's able to survive nearly any unboosted attack from full health thanks to its ability Multiscale and decent bulk, allowing it to function as a great blanket check to many Pokemon. Dragonite's movepool is very wide and can be customized to take on Pokemon that threaten the team, notably helping immensely against Steel and Normal. Dragonite's access to Extreme Speed allows it to easily revenge kill weakened threats such as Greninja without fear of breaking its Multiscale. However, its typing does not offer anything unique to Dragon defensively while also compounding its weakness to Ice and carrying a notable weakness to Rock. Furthermore, Dragonite's need to be at full HP to utilize Multiscale and check key threats such as Mega Diancie puts pressure on it to avoid status and on its teammates to keep Stealth Rock off of the field throughout the battle. Additionally, Dragonite has limited opportunities to come onto the field, as switching into attacks risks breaking Multiscale. Dragonite's mediocre Speed allows it to be easily taken advantage of after revenge killing a foe. Its four moves are easily exploitable, as common Pokemon resist or are immune to all of them and they can be checked by many defensive threats.
Flying
Dragonite's high Attack and good movepool make it a good physical wallbreaker for Flying teams able to use its STAB Outrage to punch holes in defensive and offensive types alike, such as Water and Electric. Multiscale along with good bulk gives it ample opportunities to switch into passive threats provided Stealth Rock is off the field and fire off a strong attack or set up a sweep with Dragon Dance. Extreme Speed makes Dragonite an effective revenge killer, being able to pick off weakened threats such as Volcarona and Alolan Raichu. Dragonite's Dragon typing also gives several useful resistances, letting it check threats such as Calm Mind Keldeo and Zeraora. However, Dragonite is susceptible to chip damage such as status and Stealth Rock, breaking its Multiscale, making it unable to tank hits as effectively. Dragonite also is reliant on Extreme Speed to deal with many faster threats due to its mediocre Speed and 4x weakness to Ice-type moves, which lets Pokemon that carry them such as Mamoswine or Porygon2 threaten it even with Multiscale.
