Strategy Overview

Diggersby is one of the best physical wallbreakers in the metagame thanks to Huge Power along with its access to great STAB attacks, coverage in Fire Punch, and priority in Quick Attack. It is able to form an amazing offensive core when paired with a teammate such as Mega Lopunny or Mega Pidgeot, as it is able to wallbreak while its partner deals with its faster checks. However, due to common Pokemon having an immunity or resistance to Diggersby's STAB moves, Diggersby relies heavily on prediction in order to get past common defensive cores that are immune to its attacks such as Mega Sableye with Mandibuzz and Skarmory with Heatran. Incorrect predictions in matchups such as Dark and Steel can heavily impede the team's momentum, as Diggersby will be forced to switch out. Swords Dance turns Diggersby into a phenomenal setup sweeper and wallbreaker able to OHKO many walls such as Mandibuzz and Mega Venusaur and removes its need for accurate predictions. Its low Speed also leaves much to be desired; while it outspeeds the majority of defensive Pokemon, it is vulnerable to faster attackers such as Infernape, Landorus, and Tapu Bulu. Diggersby's typing and middling bulk leave it vulnerable to a large number of attacks, most notably Ice-, Water-, and Grass-type moves, as well as common priority moves such as Aqua Jet, Ice Shard, and Mach Punch. However, its Ground typing provides a key immunity to Electric, preventing foes such as Zapdos from gaining momentum through Volt Switch. Lastly, Diggersby is very reliant on its item to maintain its ability to work as a wallbreaker and should avoid switching into common Knock Off users such as Armaldo and Gliscor.
