Strategy Overview

Grass

Cradily's Rock / Grass typing along with its excellent special bulk allows it to take powerful Fire- and Flying-type attacks from Mega Charizard Y, Volcarona, and Togekiss. It is the most reliable Stealth Rock user on Grass teams because of its typing and bulk allowing it to set up Stealth Rock against Fire and Flying teams. In conjunction with its solid special bulk, Cradily has reliable recovery in Recover, giving it sustainability while also forming an excellent defensive core with Mega Venusaur. However, Cradily is susceptible to common Ice- and Fighting-type attacks from the likes of Mamoswine and Terrakion. Cradily is also extremely slow, even for a defensive Pokemon, leaving it vulnerable to stallbreakers such as Mew and Gliscor. It has mediocre Special Attack and Attack stats as well, which means certain setup sweepers such as Mega Scizor and Garchomp can set up on it with ease.

Rock

Cradily's fantastic defensive utility makes it a great asset to Rock teams as a mixed defensive wall. Its immunity to Water-type attacks thanks to Storm Drain allows it to switch into offensive Water-types that threaten Rock teams such as Mega Sharpedo and Mega Swampert. It can also beat Belly Drum Azumarill under Sticky Web. Additionally, its part Grass typing gives it a neutrality to Ground- and Grass-type attacks, which allows it to switch into Choice Scarf Tapu Bulu's Horn Leech and Landorus-T's Earthquake. Access to Recover lets it remain healthy throughout a match, making it a reliable defensive wall. Unfortunately, Cradily is incredibly passive, leaving it unable to threaten setup sweepers like Mega Scizor and Mega Gallade or stallbreakers like Mew and Gliscor. This passiveness also makes it a momentum drain on more offensive Rock teams that rely on constant pressure from offensive threats like Terrakion and Mega Diancie.
