Strategy Overview

Fire

Charizard is blessed with two equally viable Mega Evolutions, which makes it an excellent choice for every Fire team. Mega Charizard X makes use of Dragon Dance along with a high Attack stat and Tough Claws to be a potent late-game sweeper, and respectable bulk along with reliable recovery in Roost gives it more opportunities to set up a Dragon Dance. Mega Charizard X's Dragon typing also gives it a handy neutrality to Water-type attacks and a helpful resistance to Electric-type attacks, granting it more opportunities to set up a Dragon Dance. However, Mega Charizard X lacks its other formes' immunity to Ground-type attacks, which leaves it susceptible to common Ground-type attacks from the likes of Mamoswine and Garchomp. It is easily stopped by status, with paralysis and poison specifically hindering its ability to effectively sweep. Charizard is also 4x weak to Stealth Rock before it Mega Evolves and extremely reliant on Flare Blitz to sweep, which means Mega Charizard X is easily worn down.

Mega Charizard Y is a superb wallbreaker, being able to KO bulky walls such as Zapdos and Hippowdon. It also has Drought, which weakens Water-type attacks and enables it to use Solar Beam without needing to charge. Its great coverage in Solar Beam and Focus Blast means it can get past some of its would-be checks and counters such as Swampert and Tyranitar, and access to Defog gives Fire teams a secondary form of entry hazard control. Mega Charizard Y's Flying typing makes it immune to Ground-type attacks, which gives it opportunities to wallbreak, and decent special bulk along with reliable recovery in Roost allows it to take most special attacks with ease. However, Mega Charizard Y is 4x weak to Stealth Rock, so Rapid Spin support from Torkoal is almost always necessary. It also doesn't have the best Defense stat, which means it is particularly susceptible to physical attackers such as Garchomp and Mega Sharpedo. Mega Charizard Y is extremely predictable because of its limited coverage options.

Flying

Mega Charizard Y is an exceptional wallbreaker and is among the strongest wallbreakers available to Flying-type teams. Its ability, Drought, boosts Fire-type moves, allowing its Fire-type STAB attacks to OHKO or 2HKO almost every neutral target. Drought also has the bonus of halving the power of Water-type attacks and allowing Charizard to use Solar Beam, improving its matchup against Water- and Rock-types such as Azumarill, Manaphy, and Alolan Golem. Access to Focus Blast prevents Mega Charizard Y from being walled by Heatran and Tyranitar, some of the only would-be defensive counters available to their respective teams. Roost provides Charizard with longevity, allowing it to pressure the opposing team as a wallbreaker through both the early- and mid-game. Mega Charizard Y supports its team through an Ice neutrality and good special bulk, allowing it to be an offensive switch-in to special Ice-type attacks. For example, Mega Charizard Y can switch in on Life Orb Nidoking's Ice Beam and proceed to force it out. Unfortunately, Mega Charizard Y has a crippling weakness to Stealth Rock, taking 50% HP of damage upon entry. Defog support is necessary when using Mega Charizard Y, as Stealth Rock greatly limits Charizard's ability to switch in and removes its ability to sponge special Ice-type attacks.
