Strategy Overview

Swoobat's niche simply comes from its ability, Simple. Using Calm Mind, it can snowball through teams more quickly faster than other setup sweepers such as Sandaconda and Uxie can. After Grassy Seed activation and one Calm Mind, Stored Power 2HKOes Audino, and another Calm Mind sees Gigalith, the tier's best special wall, KOed after Stealth Rock. Thanks to Calm Mind's Special Defense boosts, faster special attackers like Whimsicott and Ribombee struggle to revenge kill it, although Whimsicott can bother Swoobat with Encore. With Heat Wave, set-up Swoobat can also tear through Steel-types like Ferroseed and Doublade, which are usually solid checks to Psychic-types. Another boon for Swoobat is its great Speed tier, which makes it harder for tier staples like Charizard and Archeops to revenge kill. However, it relies on Grassy Seed to be effective, restricting it to Grassy Terrain teams. Despite Grassy Seed activation giving Swoobat Defense and denying Knock Off's damage boost, its physical bulk is overall poor, with a weakness to Stealth Rock alongside common Dark- and Rock-type moves not helping it. Finally, Swoobat can't fit both Heat Wave and Substitute on the same set, which means either it relies on teammates to remove Steel-types so it can sweep, or it becomes unable to set up on more passive Pokemon like Audino without fearing Toxic.
