Strategy Overview

An excellent typing, a plethora of utility moves such as Toxic, Yawn, and Stealth Rock, and good matchups against the tier's entry hazard removers like Excadrill, Tentacruel, and Salamence make Swampert a solid hazard setter. Good matchups against notable threats like Rotom-W, Cobalion, and Raikou contribute to Swampert's great defensive utility. Flip Turn also lets it be a slow pivot, limiting its passivity, making progress against walls such as Chansey, and bringing in slower teammates like Thundurus-T to wallbreak. However, the plethora of Grass-types like Amoonguss, Tangrowth, and Zarude is incredibly hindersome to Swampert, scaring it out with 4x super effective attacks. Moreover, powerful wallbreakers like Hydreigon, Keldeo, and Primarina take advantage of its lack of reliable recovery to break through it. Swampert is very vulnerable to status and Knock Off, especially from Pokemon it should check like Excadrill and Nihilego, which make it much less effective as a tank. Swampert also faces severe competition from Hippowdon as a Ground-type Stealth Rock setter, which possesses reliable recovery to let it consistently check Zygarde-10% and Cobalion throughout a game. However, Swampert's access to Flip Turn and ability to blank Rotom-W gives it a solid niche over Hippowdon on more offensive VoltTurn teams.
