Strategy Overview
Despite its average movepool, Suicune is a decent setup sweeper due to its astounding bulk and valuable defensive typing that allow it to set up against distinguished threats such as Scizor, Cobalion, and Excadrill. With Pressure, Calm Mind, and its superb bulk, Suicune is able to stall out threatening walls such as Amoonguss, Chansey, and even Assault Vest Tangrowth if it gets burned by Scald, allowing it to take many unsuspecting teams by surprise if it gets a few free turns. However, Suicune is held back by the prevalence of Grass- and Electric-types that can limit it from boosting like Tangrowth, Thundurus-T, and Zarude, the latter of which can cure Scald burns with Jungle Healing and use Power Whip to break past it. Powerful wallbreakers like Keldeo and Choice Specs Hydreigon are able to force Suicune into using Rest before it sets up, limiting its offensive presence and exploiting its somewhat limited defensive value as a Water-type. Rest is also unreliable recovery, forcing Suicune to rely on Leftovers alongside Rest in order to regain HP. This makes Suicune susceptible to Knock Off, as losing Leftovers would require Suicune to use Rest more often, limiting its ability to face threats like Scizor. In addition, its overreliance on Sleep Talk isn't great either, as you rely on RNG to choose the ideal move. Suicune faces competition from Calm Mind Primarina, which sports an additional Fairy-typing to better threaten foes with neutral damage, but Suicune's ability to potentially turn Assault Vest Tangrowth into setup fodder is an important niche.
