Strategy Overview

Due to its high Attack, low Speed, and strong Gyro Ball, Stakataka is a solid offensive Trick Room setter in DOU. The combination of its good Defense and Rock / Steel typing gives Stakataka good defensive utility; it is able to reliably switch in against some of the tier's most threatening attackers such as Dragon Dance Kyurem-B and Celesteela while acting as an effective check to Naganadel. Because of Stakataka's ability, Beast Boost, it can very quickly snowball and become difficult to handle. Its nuclear Gyro Ball can OHKO Diancie and Kyurem-B in addition to dealing good damage to neutral targets like Tapu Fini and Rillaboom. However, if Trick Room is denied via Fake Out, Taunt, Spore, or any other means, Stakataka has a hard time posing an offensive threat due to its incredibly low Speed. Because its typing leaves it vulnerable to notable special attackers such as Volcanion, Tapu Fini, and Heatran, Stakataka partners well with Fake Out users such as Incineroar and Pokemon with redirection moves such as Amoonguss to help alleviate these weaknesses. It also works well with more consistent Trick Room setters such as Porygon2 and Cresselia. Most importantly, Stakataka has direct competition from fellow Rock-type Diancie as an offensive Trick Room setter; Diancie is generally more reliable, as it has better defensive capabilities, is immune to the effects of Intimidate, and has access to a strong spread move in Diamond Storm, granting it snowballing potential.
